Singing to Transcend

Singing to Transcend is a half-day immersive retreat designed to lift you out of the noise of the mind and into both your body and a higher consciousness. At its center is singing itself — the kind of sustained, communal, cyclical singing that has been used across cultures and centuries to shift consciousness, open the heart, and carry people into augmented states of awareness. Through themed reflection and guided chanting, we build toward transcendence together: rising into a felt sense of wholeness and oneness with life, coined "awakened awareness" by researcher and scientist Lisa Miller.

And don't worry — we won't be singing for 4 hours straight! Singing will be interspersed with guided meditation, journaling, and optional sharing to help you journey deeper into awakened awareness.

Science is now helping us understand the physical mechanisms behind the peace and relief that this kind of communal chanting produces. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of "fight or flight" and into rest and repair — lowering cortisol, slowing the heart rate, and easing the mind into alpha and theta brainwave states associated with mental clarity and emotional integration. It also stimulates the vagus nerve, the body's main pathway for calming the stress response, and has been linked to increased oxytocin and a felt sense of safety.

None of this happens alone. Part of what makes this possible is the safety of the group itself — a held space where genuine connection and vulnerability can happen, because everyone is there for the same freedom you are. This isn't a workshop — there's nothing to learn or master here. You don't need to be a singer, and you don't need any particular belief system to feel at home in this room. What you'll find is permission: to set down your worries, open your heart, and experience something that many people describe as freeing and sacred — however you define that word for yourself.

Many who engage with me in this type of singing also report spiritual feelings as well. We now understand the physical mechanisms at play, but the mystical ones are also activated, and those may remain a mystery to us. I invite you to experience this profound sense of connection and expansion for yourself. For me, personally, it is a type of prayer. It is connection with the Beloved - the sweetest state of being. And yet you don't have to follow any specific spiritual path to experience these feelings, or to be at home here. This serves all, regardless of background or belief.

Whether you come seeking a break from anxiety, a feeling of deep spiritual connection, or simply a few hours of feeling truly free to be yourself and sing among others, Singing to Transcend meets you where you are.
